Lumora

Built from what was left behind.

Material Palette & Technique

Brutally minimal and striking.

Structure - Scrap Metal & Cement Board

Metal members and cement board from demolition sites - structurally assessed, cleaned and revamped.

Roofing (Exterior) - Jute Mat

Agricultural by-product used as weather layer - biodegradable, thermally effective, zero-embodoed-energy material.

Roofing (Interior) - Bamboo Mat

Woven bamboo ceiling - lightweight, fast-renewable, and beautiful when lit from above.

Membrane - Recycled PVC

Thin waterproofing layer between roof mats sourced from reclaimed industrial sheet material.

Lumora began as a platform and became a home. The evolution of the brief mirrors the material philosophy of the project: start with what you have, discover what it can become. The one-BHK space above the pool and jacuzzi was assembled almost entirely from scrap: cement board collected from demolition sites, metal members, bison board – materials that most construction projects discard.

The roofing layers the project’s ambitions particularly well: jute matting on the exterior, bamboo matting on the interior, with a thin recycled PVC membrane between them. The result is a roof that is insulating, breathable, and made entirely from either agricultural by-products or reclaimed industrial material.

Below, a Miyawaki forest, a dense, rapid-growth native planting method has been established with trails, hardscape, and water features. Lumora is not just a building on a site. It is the beginning of an ecosystem.

Impact & Experience

Second life, first principles

Footprint

Almost entirely assembled from what is salvaged; mateiral that was headed for landfill, redirected into a liveable, finished space.

Toxicity

No paint, no synthetic layer, a membrane made of agricultural by-product and revamped industrial material.

Sparkles of Light

Woven light, living forest. The woven bamboo ceiling diffuses daylight softly and evenly with Miyawaki forest surrounding the structure keeping the air cool, clean, and alive with chirps.

Experience

Materials that respond to where they are, scrap materials carry the patina of their previous lives, the forest grows around the building, so both arrive together and age together.
